Transportation

The failure to address our transportation problems, particularly in metro Atlanta, is costing our citizens in higher fuel bills, less time with their families and increased harm to our environment. The passage of the Transportation Bill in 2010 was a step in the right direction. Unfortunately many portions of the bill will not take effect until 2012.

Current funding formulas for transportation programs in our state are out dated and inadequate. We need additional legislation to dedicate the one cent sales tax on gasoline to transportation funding rather than to the general fund. As we develop our regional transportation plans required by the new transportation bill we must be creative and innovative. We must work for the efficient use of mass transportation including light and heavy rail, and do a better job of coordinating development planning with transportation planning.
